The second cut is the deepest: On my gray hair

The author in happier, less gray times

I was pretty sanguine, pretty mature about the first gray hair, which I found weekend before last. It was bright bright silver right in the middle of my hair and stuck up away from all the others, making it incredibly noticeable, but after a few tense minutes inspecting it (it might have been blonde! I had to be sure!) I decided I’m not the kind of person who gets upset about one little hair. La la la, I thought, skipping merrily away from the mirror. I’ll worry about it when I’m 40. It’s just one hair.

Fast forward to this weekend
Now there are TWO gray hairs. This isn’t just a single event, this is a friggin’ TREND. An epidemic. They’re taking over! I did the math man, and if I find a new gray hair every weekend things are gonna get REAL very quickly. I won’t even make it to 30 without having to make some serious decisions about dyeing it.

 Backstory
I’m super lazy and can’t even get my hairs did on a regular basis (like every 12 weeks is a little too much for me) and now I’m staring down the barrel of an appointment every what, 8 weeks? Also, I’m trying to save money (and failing) but do you know how much highlights COST?!!! Starting at $85, the Aveda site tells me. Starting. Could be more. Do you know how much stuff I could get at Sephora for $85 plus tip? Like two things, but still!

 In the end
It’s not that I’m sanguine about the gray hair partay that’s being thrown on my scalp—not anymore—but ultimately I decided to take the watchful waiting approach. What am I gonna do, dye two hairs? (The thought did occur to me). Screw it. Life’s too short and I’m too damn lazy.
